Vacation Rental vs. Hotel in Los Cabos: When Each Makes Sense
Los Cabos has exceptional hotel options. The One&Only Palmilla, Las Ventanas al Paraíso, Esperanza, and The Cape are all genuinely good. If a hotel is what you want, those are the right places.
But for a significant portion of Los Cabos visitors, a vacation rental is the better fit — and not just on cost. Here's when each makes sense.
When a hotel is right
Solo travelers and couples who want full service (housekeeping every day, room service, concierge on demand) often prefer hotels. The resort infrastructure does most of the logistics for you.
Families who want kids' clubs, reliable beach access, and activities organized on-property may find a major resort more practical than managing a rental independently.
First-time visitors who are uncomfortable with the process of self-service check-in and coordinating with a local team often default to hotels for the predictability.
When a vacation rental is right
Groups of 4 or more: a vacation rental with a private pool and 3+ bedrooms costs the same or less than equivalent hotel rooms, and the shared communal space (pool, kitchen, outdoor dining) makes the group experience qualitatively different. Hotel rooms separate groups; rentals bring them together.
Longer stays (7+ nights): the per-night cost advantage of a rental increases with length of stay. A kitchen means not every meal is a restaurant meal. Laundry in-unit means packing lighter. These aren't small things over a week.
Guests who value privacy: vacation rentals don't involve shared lobbies, hallways, or pool areas with other guests. Your pool, your terrace, your kitchen.
Anyone booking through an OTA: if you're going to book a vacation rental anyway, booking it directly with the property management company removes the 14–17% Airbnb service fee. The savings on a 7-night stay at $300/night are $300–360.
The comparison on cost
A 3-bedroom vacation rental in Tramonti or Copala with a pool runs $350–600/night direct-booked. Three hotel rooms at a comparable quality resort run $450–800/night per room — $1,350–2,400 total for three rooms.
The rental wins on cost for groups, full stop. The hotel wins on in-room service amenities and hassle-free experience for smaller parties.
Booking direct
If you're choosing a vacation rental, booking directly with the management company instead of through Airbnb or Vrbo eliminates service fees. On a $400/night rental for 7 nights, the Airbnb service fee to the guest adds $392–476. Booking directly with us removes that entirely.
