Holidays in Los Cabos: What's Actually Different About Christmas and New Year's in Cabo
December and early January are the most expensive weeks to visit Los Cabos. They're also among the best. The weather in late December runs 75–82°F with almost no humidity and consistent afternoon sun. The Sea of Cortez is swimmable. The Pacific is rougher but still walkable.
If you're weighing whether the holidays are worth the premium, the honest answer is: it depends on what you're paying for.
What's different during the holidays
The marina area in Cabo San Lucas gets genuinely festive from about December 20 through January 2. Restaurants run special menus, clubs add cover charges, and the whole stretch from the marina to Medano Beach fills up with tourists from the US, Canada, and Mexico City.
New Year's Eve in Cabo San Lucas is a real event — fireworks over the arch, packed beach bars, and a street energy that's hard to replicate at other times of year. If that's the version of Cabo you want, December 28–January 2 delivers it.
San José del Cabo has a different character during the holidays. The Thursday art walk continues, the central plaza gets lights, and the restaurants in the art district run full menus — but it doesn't have the same density of people as Cabo San Lucas. Guests who prefer a quieter holiday experience tend to prefer the San José side.
Practical things to know
Book flights and properties early. December 26–January 1 is fully booked by September in a normal year. The same week in 2025 was largely spoken for by August.
Restaurants in the marina area require reservations for December 24 and 31. Walk-ins at popular spots aren't realistic those nights.
Traffic on the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is heavier than usual during holiday week. If your property is in Palmilla or the East Cape and you plan to spend evenings in Cabo San Lucas, budget 40–60 minutes each way.
Who this week suits
Holiday week in Los Cabos works well for: groups celebrating a specific occasion, families combining beach time with a festive atmosphere, and anyone whose schedule makes December the only option.
It's less ideal for: guests who want quiet beaches and uncrowded restaurants, those sensitive to higher prices, or travelers who prefer the off-peak pace of Cabo.
