Getting Around Los Cabos: Airport, Taxis, Uber, and Renting a Car
Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) sits at the northern end of the tourist corridor, roughly equidistant from San José del Cabo (15 minutes) and Cabo San Lucas (45–55 minutes). Most vacation rentals fall somewhere along that 20-mile stretch.
Airport to your rental: your options
Private transfers are the most straightforward option. Book through your property management team or a local operator before you arrive. The cost runs $50–90 one-way for a sedan (two passengers) to $90–150 for a van (6–8 passengers). Your property team can arrange this.
Uber operates at SJD and works reliably. Pickup is at the rideshare zone on the arrivals level. Pricing to Cabo San Lucas is typically $35–55; to San José del Cabo, $15–25. Surge pricing applies during peak hours and holidays.
The airport also has authorized taxi stands. Prices are fixed by zone and posted on signs at the stands. They're competitive with Uber for shorter trips (San José area) and comparable to private transfers for Cabo San Lucas.
Avoid unsolicited offers from people approaching you in the arrivals hall. They are typically timeshare sales drivers, not legitimate transportation.
Moving around during your stay
Uber is the practical daily transport option for most guests. Coverage is reliable across both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The corridor resorts and communities like Palmilla, Quivira, and Tramonti are all served.
Regular taxis are ubiquitous in Cabo San Lucas, especially near the marina and Medano Beach. Agree on the price before getting in — meters are not standard. A ride within Cabo San Lucas typically runs $8–15.
Renting a car makes sense if you plan to explore beyond the Los Cabos corridor — visits to Todos Santos (1 hour north), the East Cape, or inland Baja. For guests who plan to stay in the immediate Cabo San Lucas / San José area, Uber and taxis cover most needs without the parking and traffic complications.
Driving notes
Mexico Highway 1 (the Transpeninsular Highway) runs the full length of the corridor and is in good condition. The road between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is four-lane and well-marked. Speed bumps (topes) appear frequently in town areas — they're often unmarked and abrupt.
Parking in downtown Cabo San Lucas is limited. Most resort areas and properties have dedicated parking. If you're driving to the marina area for dinner, plan to park once and walk.
For guests staying at properties in Copala at Quivira or Tramonti, Uber and taxi availability is good and a car is rarely necessary for in-town trips.
